作为一部儿童恐怖片，它在“儿童”和“恐怖”两种类型之间平衡得很好，既有属于童话的纯真、奇幻和成长意义，也不乏惊悚效果极佳的恐怖桥段和元素，对主角的塑造也充满恐怖影迷情结，甚至还能将“糖果屋”这一旧童话故事进行续写并成为情节发展的重大转折。当然对大多数成年观众来说，这种低龄化的简单故事未必还能引起太多兴趣，但能够在有限的尺度范围内做到这种程度已经算相当不错了。
